What are Page Layouts in Salesforce?

Understanding Page Layouts in Salesforce: A Complete Beginner Guide

Hi there.

Page Layouts in Salesforce define what users see when they open a record. They control the arrangement of fields, sections, buttons, and related lists. In simple terms, a page layout shapes the structure of a record page and plays a major role in how users interact with data.

A Page Layout is the blueprint of a record page. It decides:

  • Which fields are visible
  • How fields are grouped
  • What buttons appear
  • Which related lists are displayed
  • What actions users can take

It works like designing a form where you arrange the information in a way that makes sense to the user.

A well-designed layout helps users work more efficiently. Some key benefits:

  • Shows only relevant information
  • Reduces screen clutter
  • Allows different teams to see different layouts
  • Makes editing and updating records easier
  • Improves overall user experience

Good layouts guide users and help them focus on what matters.

Record Types allow you to separate different business processes and control picklist values for each type of record. Page Layouts, on the other hand, define how the record appears to the user. When used together, they help you tailor both the data and the user experience for different teams.

Page Layouts can be assigned in two ways:

  • Directly to profiles
  • Through profiles + record types (if record types exist)

This flexibility enables you to design layouts that align with each team’s responsibilities and access needs.

Most page layouts include:

Fields

Choose which fields appear and the order they appear in. You can also set fields as required.

Sections

Used to group related fields, ensuring the layout remains clean and readable.

Buttons and Actions

Determine which actions users can take, such as Edit, Delete, or custom actions.

Related Lists

Display child records such as Notes, Files, Tasks, or any related custom object records.

Mobile and Lightning Actions

Control what users see on desktop vs. mobile.

Here are some guidelines to follow:

  • Keep the layout clean and simple
  • Place important fields at the top
  • Use clear section names
  • Avoid adding unnecessary fields
  • Create separate layouts for different teams when needed
  • Think about both desktop and mobile experiences
  • Use Dynamic Forms for more flexibility and conditional visibility

We will cover Dynamic Forms in detail in our next blog. Stay tuned for it.

Multiple layouts are useful when:

  • Different teams work on the same object
  • Certain profiles need additional fields
  • Managers or leaders need access to more detailed information
  • You want to hide sensitive or internal fields from specific groups

Page layouts help maintain clarity, security, and efficiency across the system.

Page Layouts are one of the simplest and most effective ways to customize Salesforce. By keeping them structured and thoughtful, you make the platform easier to use for everyone.
